"One simple and easy to use machine" 2010-10-03

We have three of these in our extended family at different houses. They all work very well and make a great cup of espresso and or coffee. We have never had any trouble with them.

 "very good coffee machine" 2010-08-20
By A. Sadovnikov
I use Nespresso machine for about one month. It already produced 60-100 shots, makes tasty beverage for about $0.60 per cup, very neat and easy to operate. Coffee selection is excellent. Delivery of new capsules is fast. I highly recommend to buy special flat box for coffee capsules (actually, it comes free with $110 "welcome" package together with 200 capsules - a good deal). I use it to entertain my guests (it's like waiter in upscale restaurunt offers you teas in special box)and myself every morning.

The only drawback of this machine is inconvenient location of water tank - at the back side. So, every time I pour water I have to move machine from the wall and then move it back.

this Nespresso machine is perfect; it is small, fits in any kitchen, the espresso is nice and strong (flavor; Ristretto). It saves us lots of money, no more visits to the Starbucks & Donkin Donuts. very happy with the machine and coffee flavors.

"Nespresso is fantastic. Get the cheapest machine you can get." 2010-01-04
By D. Thiel (Deerfield, MA)
Below is my review of the Nespresso machine, and I love it. Couldn't be better and I highly recommend it. ONE THING THOUGH: make sure you compare the specs of the machine you buy, before you make the purchase. I bought the more expensive "cube" assuming it was better in some way (more power! yeah!) But it isn't. At the time I bought my cube, it was identical in spec (pump size, pressure, volume, etc.) to the other, cheaper machines offered. The only difference was form factor. So... if you're gonna get a nespresso, and I HOPE YOU DO, make sure choose which model to buy for the right reasons.

With all the new style espresso machines on the market (Tassimo, Keurig, Flavia, etc.) I was convinced that Nespresso was more of the same: a set of stylish gimmicks designed to convince you that this "espresso" (though not real at all) was "the real thing." It never is.

Which is why the Nespresso is so great. It IS the REAL THING. The capsules contain nothing more than espresso coffee grounds. The machine is simply an automated and miniaturized "real" espresso rig. And the results speak for themselves:

-- full bodied crema like you get from the best barista

-- speedy and HOT cups of espresso

-- the espresso produced is crisp and clear, full bodied, and smooth

-- my Sicilian wife and all her relatives (numerous, and mostly named "Maria" "Antonina" and "Dominic") all fully approve of the espresso that comes out. Comparing is to "Nonna's" would be sacrilege, but although those words have not been spoken yet, I am conviced the thought has crossed a couple minds. :-)

-- all this in under 30 seconds and within a square foot of counter space.

The frothing unit that comes with the machine is nothing short of black magic. I have NO IDEA what it does or how it does it, but the results will amaze you. And the best part is it's easy to clean: no sticky milk mess left behind to make you wonder who's gonna get sick first.

Coffee for this machine is 55 cents per cup, and Nespresso delivers online orders with astonishing speed (which is good, because you can't get the coffee from anyone else!). A bit pricey, but in this case you DO get what you pay for... and then some.

"My quest for perfect espresso is finally over!" 2006-01-06
By Ernest Hemingway (Florida)
This review is based on my experience with the Nespresso Essenza C90, but the Nespresso Essenza D90 is quite similar, and the espresso making mechanism is exactly the same.

We all have our little passions. Over the years, I have devoted too much time, money, and study to perfecting the art of making the perfect coffee and espresso. I searched the world (and the internet) for the best beans, grinders, equipment, and even tried roasting my own beans and became able to produce better potions that one can ever find in the coffee boutiques. Still, as it turns out, my efforts were in vain. The Nespresso Essenza (and probably the other Nespresso machines similar in design) produces the perfect cup and the ease of doing so, sadly, puts my efforts to shame.

The secret seems to be in the strong pumping mechanism (19 bars of pressure, same as their more expensive machines) and their superb coffee capsules. After being such a stickler for the freshest roasted estate grown beans, I balked at the use of capsules and considered it the coffee for dummies approach. I also thought that they might be kind of similar in quality to the coffee "pods" used in the new single serve coffee machines, which range from bad (for the manufacturer and supermarket brands) to only fairly good (for the best of the gourmet, limited-edition pods at over $1 each).

Against all odds, the Nespresso pods are pure magic. I ordered new pods right away, but even the sampler pods that came with the machine were incredible, despite being past their "best before" expiration date. I'm equally mystified as to how they can have about twelve varieties and almost all be exquisite, despite noticeable differences not only in strength but in flavor. The "lungo"capsules are also fantastic (these produce 4 ounces of coffee-espresso instead of the classic 1 to 2 ounce espresso). Being partial to espresso and very dark coffee, I wasn't so impressed with the two or three pods weakest in strength, but those who like traditional American coffee might prefer them.

The Nespresso capsules completely dispelled my concern that they would be limiting compared to the use of coffee beans. It turns out that the opposite is true. Sure, there may be hundreds of different beans available, with infinite possibilities of blends and roasts, but they rarely reach the superior flavor these capsules achieve. Moreover, ordering coffee beans limits you to only one or two roasts for awhile, unless you buy a variety of green coffee beans (which last much longer than roasted beans) and roast them yourself in small quantities. With the capsules, a nice variety of espresso variations are available instantly.

Having been in the habit of ordering expensive coffee beans, I find the cost of the Nespresso capsules at $.50 each and the two-day shipping charge of only $5.95 (for any quantity) very reasonable. When buying roasted coffee beans, the shipping cost for one or two day air was much higher, and I had to reorder them every few weeks to keep fresh ones on hand. Since the Nespresso capsules stay fresh much longer, I can order a several month supply at one time.

The only criticism of the machine is that the espresso might not be quite hot enough for some aficionados. However, it is just hot enough for me, and the temperature can be raised slightly by heating the cup first.

It is amazing that I can now enjoy the best espresso almost instantly. This is truly the perfect way to enjoy espresso, even if I can no longer take credit for concocting it.

"Reasonable phone for a reasonable price" 2004-11-14
By A. McPhate (Houston, TX USA)
I've had this phone for almost 2 years. Works fine anywhere in my apartment, but part of that is probably good selection of the base location. Sound quality is excellent, battery life good. I get no interference from any one else or from other equipment, and I have at least 3 wireless networks in range of this phone. Even better, the phone doesn't interfere with them! A little funky to program and set up, but okay. Features that would be great to have: battery backed clock; easy access to ringer volume control. I wrote this review because I saw a lot of people slagging this phone and it didn't seem balanced because its worked okay for me.

 "Nice features....Flawed engineering" 2004-04-09
By
This phone comes in several flavors, silver and gold (1460) trim.
My experience is with the 1460. I had all the same problems that were already mentioned. The phone comes with many nice features, but the basic operation is inferior. Range issues with going through just one wall at 10 feet, constant background static, and your own voice is played back too loud and with static, through the ear piece. A similar problem low cost Uniden 2.4G experience. Note, this is not a true 2.4Gig phone, only the base transmits at 2.4GHz, the handset transmits at 900 MHz according to the owner's manual. I returned it and got a Motorola 362 in the same price range. Fewer features, but works well and good sound quality.

 "AT&T 2.4gig 1455 phone" 2003-09-18
By Mark (Dallas, TX)
If it has an AT&T logo on it, don't get it. I have had this phone for about a year. I dealt with the static because this phone wasn't my main one. The problem I have with this phone now; the handset cannot connect with the base unit. I put a new battery in it, and followed everything the manual and what I could find on the web said to do and still it can't connect. Totally useless. I would return it but unfortunately I did not buy it at Target. I got it at the now closed Service Merchandise. This phone now sits in a pile of my other AT&T "goods?".

I do not recommend this phone.

"The Disappearing Caller ID and Garbled Messages" 2003-08-10
By Mariane Matera (Richmond, VA USA)
A co-worker purchased the same phone and had the same problem. The display on the caller ID is very faint, difficult to read, and often parts of the letters and numbers are missing. The sound quality on the messages is kind of muffled, and when you turn up the volume, that only makes it worse. We've seen these phones discounted down to $$, so you'd be crazy to pay full-price for this.

 "Good Phone" 2003-04-14

This phone works well. I live in a large apartment complex and have never had problems with picking up other people's conversations or major static interference. The handset was somewhat awkward the first few times I used the phone; the ear piece is a little too flat and the curve of the back of the phone is not quite right. However, after a few uses, I grew accustomed to it and I am quite happy with this phone. The answering machine is easy to use and can store many messages. The answering machine remote access feature is also very convenient.

I have owned a Simpletech Simpledrive for years. I think it is one of the first models of this Pinafarina style. It is only a 100 Gb drive and has been used off and on as long as I have had it. The drive has been dropped a few times off the top of my computer and has been transported for the past year in my laptop case. It has never failed and never given me any problems. I am going to buy another one only because I need a larger capacity drive now due to our growing collection of music and pictures. I love the style, the ease of use and the reliability of this drive and that it works with just a USB cord to both power it and transfer data.

I have had this hard drive for almost 2 years now. I also have the 250GB. Both have been great with my MacBook Pro. I haven't had one problem with either of them. There are 2 USB ends to plug into the computer, and for the MacBook I have to use the one that has both cords going into it or it won't recognize the drive. But that's no problem at all. I love these. I have taken good care of them and both have cases that they don't leave unless I am using them.

 "pretty good coffee" 2009-09-13
By Ned Block (Cambridge, MA United States)
This coffee is pretty good, but no one would mistake it for coffee from a real pump espresso maker. We found the best results with the LavAzza Crema e Gusto espresso/moka grind, 8.8 oz. brick that we bought from Espresso Zone. It is important not to use very high heat since if there is too much pressure, the hot water pours through a passage in the ground coffee without permeating it and one gets weak coffee. One has to screw the top onto the bottom very firmly, and it cannot be used again until the whole thing cools off completely.

The Alessi 9090 Alessi 6 Cup Stainless Steel Espresso Maker 9090/6 designed by Richard Sapper is easier to use and perhaps makes slightly better coffee but is also more expensive.

 "Perfect!" 2007-11-21
By Teri (USA)
I bought this little gem shortly after my Bialetti. I didn't read the full description of the Bialetti and was terribly disappointed when it arrived and found it to be aluminum. Hopefully I won't develop Alzheimer's for the short time I used it until I found my wonderful little Vev. First off when the descriptions say 6 cups or however many cups it is not meaning the standard 8 oz to a cup. It's referring to those small expresso cups which are something entirely different. I think my expresso cups hold about 4 oz's each. Anyway, I wanted to clear that one up as it seems it's not the first time I have seen someone confused over how much these hold. I did fret over the price of this one but it was worth every penny. It makes a fabulous expresso or cup of coffee. I have found it very easy to care for ( I use a handled sponge to get inside it) and it stays out on my stove top because it is really beautiful to look at. I have had no problems with mine leaking and the seal is super tight. I am so glad I found this kind of maker in stainless. These would make great gifts for the expresso lover. Oh, and I also HIGHLY recommend the Aerolatte frother to go along with the Vev. I warm my milk in the microwave for about 15 seconds before frothing and it makes froth comparable to any big coffee chain. Also a great little item for mixing cocoa and powdered drink mixes.

We have 5 stove top espresso makers and 4 of them are VeV Kontessas - a 2 cup, a 6 cup and two 12 cups. All machines make great espresso if you follow the instructions. We brew 'American coffee' in them as well varying amounts of ground coffee to taste. Had a bad pressure valve on one of the 12s and Vev replaced it. Had handle fall off other 12 awaiting Vev reply but anticipate no problem with warranty replacement. Never had any problems with the 2 or 6 cup machines in the 10 years since buying the first one. I would not send a bad product as a gift and I intend to send one of these as a gift this year.

 "Love it!" 2010-10-13

I really love this coffee maker. I like super fresh coffee so this does the trick. The only downside is that I like it strong so I have to set for 2 cups more than the water I fill. It's only an issue when I want to make 10 cups. Other than that it's really a great coffee maker. Coffee stays hot for a few hours.

 "Excellent Coffee Maker" 2010-10-09
By Rick WW (TX)
Prior to a month ago when I purchased this grind & brew unit, I don't think I ever made a great cup of coffee. Since then, every pot has been great. Nothing compares to fresh ground, fresh brewed java. There is no measuring with this device. Simply add whole beans (I'm using Dunkin Donuts brand), set your preferences, and walk away. Programming is very intuitive with a large screen and twist knob. Set it before you go to bed, and it grinds the beans & brews the coffee at the time you specify. Since I've only had the 455 CoffeeTEAM a short time, I can't attest to its long term durability. However, it appears to be well made and I see no reason why it shouldn't last as long or longer than a typical coffee maker. Even if I learned today it would only have an average lifespan, I would still recommend it for the price. The quality of the coffee it makes is that good. Highly recommended.

This machine, although it has some great sounding features and works ok for brewing an ok cup of coffee, doesn't seem to be the one you want if you're a real coffee connoisseur and are brewing top notch coffee varieties. The various feautres of selecting brew strength as well as ground size don't seem to make much difference in the flavor/strength of the cup. In all fairness to the manufacturer, the machine I received quickly became defective so there is a chance that it was not brewing with the correct water temperature from the get go and I just didnt notice it until the heating unit began brewing luke warm coffee (within the first week). I returned the machine and ended up getting a different brand just because I had this sneaking suspicion that over the long haul it just wasnt going to be the right coffee maker for me.

"Good for 2 years now broken" 2010-09-22

Well, I loved this coffee maker for a good while, almost two years, even with its little quirks that people have mentioned elsewhere. Basket didn't always flip over automatically, carafe lid a bit awkward, etc. But it made an excellent pot of coffee, and I loved the fact that it stayed warm without getting that boiled taste.

Now there is a problem with the grinder. We have tried everything, and I mean everything, but it just won't grind enough coffee. So I now have to use ground coffee and can't use the whole bean grinder feature at all, which was the whole point of getting such an expensive coffee maker.

I am so disappointed!

By coffee guy
Have owned this machine going on two years. Day in day out. A lot of coffee. The wife and I drink a pot each morning. No problems with this machine (a few coffee grounds get to the counter due to the not perfect sealing 'removable soft collar' on the cover lid for the grounds filter basket-but very small inconvenience considering the quality of coffee that comes out. Love the insulated carafe to take to the table and leave there. Has kept the coffee hot for two hours this way. This machine replaced a Cuisinart Grind and Brew. The Capresso just a couple parts to clean and outside of the routine descaling- just no maintenance!

"Great grinder with an Achilles heel." 2010-10-17
By Aphex242
This grider's great. We got ours from a B&M retailer and arriving at home, noticed the power switch was broken. It was a pain to return, but the replacement worked great.

...until the power switch broke about a year and a half later. I'm sensing a design flaw. Some googling about this issue confirms it's a fairly common issue. I suggest, for anyone without a broken switch, to not use it. Leave it powered on all the time, and unplug the plug after each use. If you have a broken switch, read on:

You have to unscrew the base (and pull off the timer knob). The triangle screws were rough until I realized I could just use a jeweler's screwdriver, hammer it gently in on one side of the triangle, and then unscrew them that way.

Inside it's a matter of disconnecting the two wires to the switch (I desoldered them, but it's possible to just cut them. This might not leave a lot of slack to rejoin them, however. You might need to splice in more wire with this method), soldering them together, and putting the whole thing back together.

Works like a champ. I didn't come up with this method, some rudimentary googling gave me all the info I needed.

The grinder works great. We don't have the static issues really, and it just works.

I have owned one for about a year and a half. I had the typical problems with static and broken lid on the clear bin that holds the grounds. This week the on/off switch located on the lower right side broke, killing power to the motor. Thinking to bypass the switch, I attempted to disassemble the lower end. Unfortunatley it is not made to be repaired by the owner and the warranty has lapsed.

"Great grinder, but not for those w/ expensive machines" 2010-09-17
By N. Sullivan
If you require the very finest grind - powder - for Turkish Grind - you will need another grinder. For my under $500 machine using a portafilter and pressure it was fine. Great machine, great price. Fit right in on my counter and it arrived on time, in tact. Couldn't ask for more.

 "Excellent coffee and espresso" 2010-10-17
By F. L. Maybaum (McLean, Virginia)
I liked the first Nespresso so much I bought a second one. We spend part of the year in Spain and are accustomed to European (Spanish) espresso and coffee. This machine does a great job in duplicating what we get in Spain and is easy to clean and fast to use. Push one button you get espresso, press the other you get coffee.

 "love this machine" 2010-09-12
By bargain hunter (montgomeryville, pa)
I got tired of spending $12 a day at starbucks. only thing about the machine is that you have to buy their pods and they are costly plus the shipping is costly. It has been over two years since I have had the product and so far so good. But in the last year I stopped buying the pods because I felt the shipping should be free. I now bought the Kuerig. Love it and you can use any coffee of your choice.

It just can't get any better at home or office (not at this price anyway). Clean, smooth system, that always deliver the best cup of coffee.

 "convenient and tasty" 2010-05-28
By Jacqueline K. R. (Portland, OR)
I received my Nespresso machine as a gift. Though I love coffee, I would've never bought this for myself. In my mind espresso machines are big, messy, and a hassle. And honestly when I realized that you had to buy specific "pods" for this machine I silently groaned in my head. But the fact that the espresso is in a pod is the whole reason why it's such a clean machine. You never even see grounds. The only thing you have to worry about is if the reservoir has water in it, and every few days you have to empty the pod receptacle. It is super easy to use. Pretty much every morning, the first thing I do is turn the machine on. I'm quite shocked that after 6 months I still use this thing daily. Not only does it produce good espresso, it's faster and easier than making a pot of coffee. My only complaint is that the machine is plastic. I haven't had any problems, but it SEEMS kind of flimsy. It is very cute though, and takes up little counter space.

"Love the machine/hate the coffee" 2009-10-22
By J. Wallace (Seattle, WA United States)
I am in Seattle and used to a very strong espresso (can you say "Charbucks"). =The strongest espresso blend offered at Nespresso pales in comparison. It tastes waterdowned. I've tried to figure out if I"m doing something wrong, but it's a simple enough machine that I'm sure I'm not. Probably good if you drink your espresso "straight" but if you add milk or ice, it's disappointing, at least to me!
